Poetry Night…  a night of poetry  by Barton Sutter, Liz Minette, Rebecca Paradis, Connie Wanek, and Cal Benson

This event  is the 3rd in the 7 week series in conjunction with  the exhibit Venus:  Poets and Fiber Artists Reflect.

Barton Sutter has won three Minnesota Book Awards and only wears shirts that are 100% cotton. He feels the moral and political fiber of this country has been severely strained; therefore, he’s written a play called “Bushed: A poetical, Political, Partly Musical Tragicomedy in Two Acts,” which is being performed in Duluth the first three weekends in October by Rubber Chicken Theater.

Liz Minette has had poems published in “What Light”, the mnartists.org anthology, Main Channel Voices, published in Winona, MN and Dust & Fire Review, among others.  In April 2008, she participated,  in the Lake Superior Writers program “Noteworthy:  Musicians & Poets Collaborate for Peace”.  She divides her time  between work, long walks (when not working), drinking coffee (not while walking), dj’ing for a women’s music show, writing, and sometimes just thinking about writing  :)

Rebecca Paradis makes her home in historic Mendota MN, has been
writing since a Spring epiphany at age 10.  LOVES to read out loud,
has had a few poems in print. Grown children and grandchildren are close
at hand. Is lucky. Is loved.

Karen Monson-Thompson First Star

Connie Wanek is the author of two books of poems: /Bonfire/ (1997) and
/Hartley Field/ (2002).  She also served as an editor of the anthology,
/To Sing Along the Way: Minnesota Women Poets from Pre-Territorial Days
to the Present/ (2006), which has won several awards.  Her third book of
poems, /On Speaking Terms/, is forthcoming from Copper Canyon Press in
2009.  Ted Kooser named her a 2006 Witter Bynner Fellow of the Library
of Congress.

  • Connie is teamed with weaver Karen Monson-Thompson of SuperiorKaren’s 24 harness weaving, First Star is above.

Cal Benson, a recently retired teacher, is now writing poetry and
waiting for a prosaic muse to strike.  His most recent collection of
poetry is Dakota Boy from Calyx Press (2007).

  • Cal’s fiber partner is Cherie Hamilton of Duluth, who for this exhibit is working in the fiber technique of trapunto.

Event is free and open to the public.
