Why you don’t need bargain hunters

let's talk by Bill

The current rebellion over underpricing soccer moms on Etsy has gotten a lot of other artists’ undies in a bundle. There are few options for artists to sell their work on-line so the sites that offer all the things that make us creatives shudder like credit card processing, store front design etc., are very enticing.

Etsy, cheap art and the issue of change

The issue of cheap art, Etsy and change let's talk by Bill

The culture of cheap took hold a long time ago and we are now seeing the extreme results. Ellen Ruppel Shell’s excellent book “Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture” really covers the issue. Also Dan Ariely’s book “Predictably Irrational” provides new insights through research he and others conducted at MIT and elsewhere.

Lorrie talks about the importance of sharing wisdom

2010 by Bill

Each of the artists featured here has made efforts to develop emerging artists through whatever ways work best, whether through teaching, lending a hand with a newcomer on Etsy or other on line venues or just making friends with somebody new to the scene. One of the important traits of a leader is their security in the uniqueness of their work and their knowledge that while technique may be copied style and vision cannot be.

Art is for all…or rather, all can draw, or rather…all SHOULD draw.

2010 by Lorrie Whittington

I have lost count of the people who have said to me, when having told them I am an artist, or that I had studied art at University, how much they loved art at and painting at school. How much they loved drawing or painting as children.

All about the “M” word

General marketing tips by Bill

Marketing has not had a good rep, particularly among us creative types, we like to see ourselves as above such mundane things as having to sell our work. However, the hard truth is unless we are independently wealth, win the lottery or have a rich aunt we have to market our work.

Don’t shoot yourself in the foot…invest in yourself instead

The ARTISTSscenter best of by Bill

One of the primary ways in which businesses and the people who operate them become successful is through self investment. Nothing could be more important than owners of of small businesses to invest in the tools and training they need to successfully operate and grow their business to the level that matches their vision. Self […]

Knowing your buyers and building your network

The ARTISTSscenter best of by Bill

The Changes that have occurred over the past year have changed the business playing field in more ways than one, and one of the biggest changes has been in the way small businesses can market themselves. While networking was part of the “old way” of doing things its’ effectiveness often left a lot to be desired, not the least of which was the limited ways in which small businesses could connect to their buyers and potential buyers.

Breaking new Ground & community building

2009 by Bill

There are so many ways to invite people to share your journey on the internet. My website has an RSS feed that people can subscribe to and then they will receive alerts every time I add something new there. Then there’s my daily painting blog, readers can subscribe and get the daily post in their inbox, there’s also a new blogger feature in the sidebar that allows people to actually become a “follower” of my blog.

Jan Blencowe talks about business and marketing

2009 by Bill

I began a blog for my daily paintings in 2005, inspired by the creator of the painting a day movement Duane Keiser. After being featured in an article in Domino Magazine with Keiser and several other “daily painters” sales took off and many more opportunities came because of that exposure.
