The Art of Going Pro: an identity crisis

2010 by Bill

The language we use to describe ourselves, what we do, how we do it and how we frame our responses to decisions, is directly related to how we are in the world and how others experience us…it seals our identity and in turn describes our vocation.

how artist can save the world

Save the Artist Save the World

2010 by Bill

creating art is a revolutionary act it changes things, it changes the way we see the world and more importantly effects the way those who see and get our work also see the world.
creating art is not about following directions, it’s not about “doing the right thing” , it’s not about fitting in and it’s not about precisely emulating a style.

ted talks for artists

Leading your followers, sliced bread, whales, Twitter, and history

let's talk by Bill

Note: This was originally posted Tuesday 2/9/10 but taken down due to code conflicts that were effecting the site’s performance. I’ve fixed the bugs so these outstanding TED talks could be available to you.

The following TED talks occurred last year, they talk mostly about change and the shift we are all feeling. More importantly they also offer insights into the depth of the shift and possibly if you listen carefully glimpses into what our possibilities can be. We are lucky to be living in the time because history is being made to the scale of significance as the printing press, electricity and the telephone. Each speaker provides a different point of view from a different vantage point of the same thing.

self investment is important for small business

Getting Started on the right foot: part III

2010 by Bill

If you cut corners on tools, you’ll end up more often than not, increasing your production time, decreasing your margin, and ultimately your profits. A common outcome is not paying yourself and that doesn’t help anybody.

Art is for all…or rather, all can draw, or rather…all SHOULD draw.

2010 by Lorrie Whittington

I have lost count of the people who have said to me, when having told them I am an artist, or that I had studied art at University, how much they loved art at and painting at school. How much they loved drawing or painting as children.

Lorrie talks about business and art

2010 by Bill

My marketing journey has not been as well planned as I would have hoped or advocate. However, I did write down some SMART goals of what I wished to achieve, and wrote a loose business plan, which I need to update. Having done some business courses, the skills and tools I learnt from those have stood me in good stead, particularly when it comes to planning, marketing and measuring performance.

Jan talks about lessons learned

2009 by Bill

Selling your work takes a lot of time! It’s an entirely new area for most artists. You need to get educated about sales, marketing and the business end of art, that’s as important as taking workshops and classes for painting. The second most important thing is learning to find the balance between creating art and running the business side. It’s really important to embrace the business side of your art and approach it with as much enthusiasm and creativity as your artwork.

Building an Art Business

Building an Art buisiness by Bill

One of the primary subjects of 2009 was building a sustainable business from your art, a business that could support you so you could do what you love. This group of articles focuses on key issues starting with building your home base and ending with learning the real costs of business.

Breaking new Ground & community building

2009 by Bill

There are so many ways to invite people to share your journey on the internet. My website has an RSS feed that people can subscribe to and then they will receive alerts every time I add something new there. Then there’s my daily painting blog, readers can subscribe and get the daily post in their inbox, there’s also a new blogger feature in the sidebar that allows people to actually become a “follower” of my blog.
