Liese Martin on Marketing

027_martin-copyTell us about your marketing journey, how did you start? When did you discover that you needed to market?

For me it started with Google Analytics tracking on my Etsy store. I found out about using Google Analytics by typing something like “how to increase Etsy traffic” into the Google search bar and finding something about it on someone’s blog. Once I had it set up,  I could see hits coming from Twitter, other artist’s blogs, etc. That made me realize that I had some untapped resources to look into. Really, I just followed one hint to the next until I found something that affected my store hits in a positive way. I have learned most things I know about online selling through just asking Google questions and researching what I found for results.

Do you have a marketing strategy ?

I guess I hope to double my Etsy sales each Year, but who doesn’t? :) I plan to keep learning as I go, promoting other artists that 035_martin-copylike to promote back, finding new ways to reach customers, putting energy into what works and letting go of what doesn’t. Let’s not forget a positive attitude. That works WONDERS, really! I’m not a particularly sophisticated marketer, I’m just willing to spend time researching and I never give up.

Do you use social media online alone or do you combine it with offline efforts?

I keep my online sales and my gallery sales separate affairs so one doesn’t compete with the other. I don’t get out much besides the day job since I’m always struggling to keep up! But certainly I give it my best every day in the gallery to sell what I have there, so I’m definitely making offline efforts to turn art into revenue.
