Over the years Darcy has photographed Julie’s complex story of AIDS, multiple homes, relationships, drugs, poverty, births, deaths, loss and reunion. Following Julie from the backstreets of San Francisco to the backwoods of Alaska.

Darcy Padilla’s unflinching portrayal of Julie Baird is one of the most in-depth, visceral, and captivating documentaries in recent memory.

Her work has received numerous grants and awards including an Alexia Foundation for World Peace & Understanding Award, Open Society Institute Individual Fellowship, and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship.

About the project:

JULIE - “For the last 16 years I have been documenting the life of an AIDs-afflicted woman, Julie Baird. Julie has been on her own since her sexually abusive stepfather threw her through a glass window when she was 14 years old. She ran away from home, lived on the street, used drugs, contracted HIV, and had five children. When I first met Julie in February 1993 in the lobby of a SRO hotel in San Francisco’s Tenderloin, she was 18 years old and had just given birth to her first child, Rachel. Julie and Jack Fyffe, the 19 year-old father were both HIV positive. Rachel, they said, was their main reason for living.

Throughout the years I have photographed Julie’s complex story of AIDS, abusive relationships, drug use, multiple homes and poverty. A victim of child abuse, Julie often neglected her own children. A high school dropout, she depends on welfare to feed her family. HIV-positive, she fights to stay off drugs.

Julie’s is a story of a survivor. The telling of it enriches the understanding of the poorest and most desperate among us. I am continuing to document Julie’s life and it is my fervent hope that Julie’s story inspires a greater awareness of the plight of people like her.”

Herzog first finds the Dalai Lama at an assembly of half a million pilgrims at the place of Buddha’s enlightenment in India. The director then films a pilgrimage to sacred Mt. Kailash before he goes to Austria, where the Dalai Lama presides over an important ritual known as the Kalachakra (wheel of time) initiation. Herzog’s resonant voice-over enhances this beautiful exploration of Tibetan culture. Germany / 2003 / 80 min. / English and Tibetan with English subtitles

The catch is their teacher. Soccer-obsessed, charismatic filmmaker and “citizen of the world” Khyentse Norbu may be one of the most eminent Tibetan Buddhist teachers known, but it is a job description he slyly seems to reject at every turn. With music by Sting and an appearance by Bernardo Bertolucci. Canada / 2003 / 103 min. / English

With indelible images of the full cycle of life in a traditional Buddhist community-birth, marriage, livelihood, harvests, religion, and death-this film offers an intimate view of a world that no longer exists, as modernization and dislocation take their toll. Contains images that may be disturbing to some viewers. Japan / 1991 / 85 min. / English and Tibetan with English subtitles / 16mm

IMAGINASIA

Family programs for children 8–14 with adult companion.

Paintings for Meditation
Sunday, April 18, 2 pm
Observe a Tibetan artist as he paints a thangka, and in the classroom learn a pin-hole technique used to copy details and compose religious paintings.

Prayers in the Wind
Saturday, April 24 and May 1; Sunday, April 25 and May 2, 2 pm
Use hand-carved wooden printing blocks from the great stupas at Swayambhunath and Bodhinath in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal to print prayer flags and paper prints of Buddhist deities and prayers for peace
and protection.

The juried artists and youth artists, our schools and students, and the neighborhood all gain in this partnership. I am really proud of this Saint Paul Public Schools Community Education event. Art at Highland is a great way for so many parts of our community to interact. Community Ed’s partnership with Artists’ Circle, a local educational advocacy group for fine crafts, makes this a highly successful community event.”

Friends of FiftyCrows

You are invited Thursday, March 4th for an opening and book signing with Judith Fox. We are excited to exhibit two bodies of work by Fox: “I Still Do: Loving and Living with Alzheimer’s”, a powerful, poetic and universal portrayal of aging, loving, humor, mortality and hope, also the subject of a touching photographic memoir published by powerHouse. We also present, “Sea of Dreams”, an abstract depiction of haunting beauty that explores the powerful turbulence beneath the surface calm of the ocean. Seen together, these images offer both direct and metaphoric representation of deep emotion and the resilience of the human spirit. Ms. Fox will be present and signing her new book.
I Still Do: Loving and Living with Alzheimer’s

In I STILL DO, Fox enters her husband’s world with her camera as a way of celebrating, honoring, loving and remembering Ed as he leaves the conscious world. Fox started this series when Ed was in his middle 70’s — to her, still a vigorous, handsome and sensuous man; also a man who has Alzheimer’s Disease. In photographing Ed, Fox was challenged by a desire to preserve and protect their privacy while still exposing elements of the disease to public view in order to help destigmatize Alzheimer’s Disease.

Sea of Dreams

The metaphorical images in SEA OF DREAMS explore the tension between the painterly romance of the Ocean’s surface and the turmoil beneath. The dynamic and powerful shifts of water, wind, sand and light are captured from a single distant and elevated vantage point-they go to where the wind pushes and the moon pulls, marine life is transported, the universe is heated, and coastlines are rearranged. The photographs reveal depths we may find uncomfortable. There are no horizons, no people, and no crashing waves; we’re not quite grounded. Although the ocean’s currents follow specific patterns, each instant is unique; each movement is eternal and momentary.
