Why you don’t need bargain hunters

let's talk by Bill

The current rebellion over underpricing soccer moms on Etsy has gotten a lot of other artists’ undies in a bundle. There are few options for artists to sell their work on-line so the sites that offer all the things that make us creatives shudder like credit card processing, store front design etc., are very enticing.

Leading your followers, sliced bread, whales, Twitter, and history

Note: This was originally posted Tuesday 2/9/10 but taken down due to code conflicts that were effecting the site’s performance. I’ve fixed the bugs so these outstanding TED talks could be available to you.

The following TED talks occurred last year, they talk mostly about change and the shift we are all feeling. More importantly they also offer insights into the depth of the shift and possibly if you listen carefully glimpses into what our possibilities can be. We are lucky to be living in the time because history is being made to the scale of significance as the printing press, electricity and the telephone. Each speaker provides a different point of view from a different vantage point of the same thing.

Etsy, cheap art and the issue of change

The issue of cheap art, Etsy and change let's talk by Bill

The culture of cheap took hold a long time ago and we are now seeing the extreme results. Ellen Ruppel Shell’s excellent book “Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture” really covers the issue. Also Dan Ariely’s book “Predictably Irrational” provides new insights through research he and others conducted at MIT and elsewhere.

Don’t SWAG your way through 2010

One of the favored ways for most artists is to lick their index finger, and stick it in the wind…back in the day it was the way most of us did it , in fact we did it because we didn’t know any better.

Sure, some of us kept data bases of every conceivable shred of information from sales, inventory to who bought what. Well…that did nothing more than let us continue to live out the fantasy of “doing something”.

Are You building replacements?

let's talk by Bill

The other day I was staring out the window in my office (code for spare bedroom so we can say no to certain unwanted guests). Anyway, as I floated around in dreamland, I was remembering the feelings of immortality I felt especially in my late teens, early twenties. I’m sure anyone out there over 50 knows what I’m talkin’ about…right?
