How to start building a following.

I am reminded of a post John (Ducktape Marketing) made back in April. One of the ways to begin to create a following is to offer exclusivity or as some have come to call “country club perks”. If you frequent coffee shops you no doubt have come in contact with the punch cards handed out to keep track of your purchases, and the most obvious example is airline frequent flyer programs.

As an artist you hold a unique image of mystery, people are mystified by how you create what you create. You can enhance that mystery by setting up some sort of exclusive “club” that people can gain access to by whatever criteria you set up. This tactic is yet another way of building a strong following and increasing the value of what you offer. Your willingness to show gratitude to your following will come back to you.

What can you offer to your buyers that will make feel even more connected to you? Is it private showings? Previews of new work? Exclusive workshops? How can you build a community around your work…a community that amplifies your value and in turn your presence in the market place?

Remember… do not attempt this unless you can do so authentically and from your heart. Any other way will backfire.
